It's definitely worth getting your steward to furnish the main hall, I'd say, because they get an enchanting table and alchemy lab which require a few somewhat expensive/harder to find ingredients, from what I remember. It's worth building your own bed, and a couple of chests, though, as you don't really have any say over what they build first. Usually they will put in a few bits of furniture at a time every time you leave the area and then come back (sometimes it takes longer, though, and you have to leave and come back several times).
It takes a while, and it's probably a bit more expensive, but if you don't want to go traipsing around buying tons of iron it's worth considering. I play with an xbox controller, I may convert one day - but for now, it serves me well.Another option is to hire a steward (the UESP has a list of which followers can become your steward - I would avoid any of the mercenaries (Marcurio and the others who you pay 500 to accompany you) as they are quite buggy as stewards) and give them a bunch of gold to furnish the rooms.

There is no limit to how many homes the Dragonborn may own, only a limit on how many houses are available. Several major cities have a house, of varying size, quality and cost, available for the player to purchase.
